WHAT IS SERIES OF CIRCUMSTANCE?

SoC is an ongoing, creative incubator and showcase that invites storytellers across disciplines to share new work on stage. Every few months, we invite playwrights, screenwriters, and other artists to present short pieces or excerpts from longer original works. Each event features a new roster of several projects (~4-5) in a one-night-only performance to a live audience.

One part mixer, one part performance all part community.

You’re welcome to present your work at any stage. One or two drafts away? Perfect. Actors can be fully off page, or in any form you desire although we do recommend being off book — we only ask that it lives on its feet. Our goal is to share work, period.

SUMMER/FALL 2025 SUBMISSION

The theme for tour next showcase is “Laughing at Myself.” Pieces should run no longer than fifteen minutes.

Submissions close July 30th.

The event will take place sometime in September, in or near Los Angeles. We’ll confirm the exact date and location as we get closer. Once the SoC has read, reviewed, and discussed all submissions, we will respond in a timely manner. Then we reach out to the selected teams with enough notice to cast, rehearse, and prepare.

HOW IT WORKS

For each showcase, we assign a loose prompt. Once the submission window has closed, we select a roster of pieces to feature in that installment of Series of Circumstance.

Then what?

We’re here to support you. We provide the venue, offer developmental feedback, and help you assemble a creative team (cast, director, etc.) as needed. Or, if you’d rather handle casting and other elements yourself, that’s fine too. Whatever best supports your process and your vision for the piece.

The SoC team will also promote the event as well as share photos, interviews, and other materials afterward - that you can use going forward. The evenings may also include a Q&A.

TERMS AND PARTICIPATION

Participants maintain all rights to their work. SoC only asks permission to share videos, photos, and promotional materials.

All participants must be available for at least one on-site rehearsal in addition to the night of the event. Outside rehearsal is highly encouraged, and we may also be able to help support this process depending on your needs.

Our team includes producers, professional writers, script consultants, and screen and stage writing professors who will read and discuss each submission.
